Dr. William Petersen graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor of science in biology and a minor in psychology. He then attended the Southern California College of Optometry where he graduated with his doctorate of optometry degree and a bachelor of science in visual science. He has had his practice and has lived in Dana Point since 1981. Dr. Petersen has done extensive research on contact lenses and surfing. He developed a sunglass contact lens for water sports as well as patenting a computer eyestrain relief device. He worked with Hobie Alter Jr. to develop Hobie polarized sunglasses. Dr. Petersen has extensive experience working with refractive surgery and cataract surgery patients. His years of experience in the area helps him to direct his patients to the best surgeons in their insurance programs.
Dr. Matt attended Whittier College on an academic scholarship where he studied chemistry and music then went on to the Southern California College of Optometry to earn his doctorate in optometry. He is a past president of the Orange County Optometric Society and was named Young Optometrist of the Year in 2008 by the California Optometric Association. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia control and serves as Wave Contact Lenses national clinical consultant for orthokeratology. Dr. Matt has held staff positions at Harbor UCLA Medical Center and Long Beach Comprehensive Health Center with emphases in diabetic eye care and glaucoma. In 2018, he was invited to be an adjunct faculty member for the Southern California College of Optometry.
Dr. Matt resides in Lake Forest with his wife Christine, an Irvine Unified elementary school teacher, and three children. Away from the office, he can often be found on a basketball court or out camping and hiking with the family.
Dr. Steve attended Johns Hopkins University where he studied psychology and completed the pre-med tract. He received his Masters in Public Health and Masters in Public Policy from the University of California Berkeley, which led to his first career at Westside Regional Center developing health and wellness programs including a first-of-its-kind Federally Qualified Health Center for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. He then earned his Doctorate in Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry, graduating Magna Cum Laude. As a member of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and as staff optometrist for Vision To Learn, Dr. Steve has particular interests in pediatric optometry and vision therapy. He also routinely volunteers his time with Opening Eyes clinics at the Special Olympics, as well as medical mission trips to Thailand, Tanzania and Mexico.
Dr. Steve lives in Irvine with his wife, one toddler and another child on the way. When not practicing optometry, he likes to jog, travel, try new foods and play cards.

Causes of Keratoconus
Your cornea is held in place by very small collagen fibers. When they are weakened and too fragile, they aren’t able to preserve the round shape of your cornea.
A reduction in the protective antioxidants of your cornea, which act to destroy damaging by-products made naturally by corneal cells, is what causes keratoconus.
In addition to genetics, some types of eye injuries may increase your chance of being diagnosed with keratoconus.
Specific ocular diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa, vernal keratoconjunctivitis and retinopathy of prematurity, as well as some systemic conditions (Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Leber's congenital amaurosis and osteogenesis imperfecta) are also associated with this corneal abnormality.

Symptoms of Keratoconus
When the shape of your cornea begins to bulge, it alters your eyesight in two different ways. As the cone shape forms, your normally smooth corneal surface becomes wavy, called irregular astigmatism. Additionally, as your cornea expands, vision becomes increasingly nearsighted. Focusing becomes impossible without eyeglasses or contact lenses. Usually, the problems begin in one eye and develop later in the other eye too.
Typically, patient’s eyeglass prescription will change often as the vision becomes worse and contact lenses will be difficult to wear due to discomfort and improper fit.
When keratoconus become more severe (which usually takes a long time however on occasion can happen rather quickly), the cornea can begin to swell and form scar tissue. This scar tissue can result in even further visual distortion and blurred vision.
Altogether, these changes can create the following symptoms:
- Blurred vision
- Streaking of lights
- Halos around bright lights at night; glare
- Sudden change of vision in only one eye
- Objects appear distorted, both near and distant
- Double vision from just one eye
- Triple ghost images
